Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Healing and Aftercare

September 8, 2026 2 min read

Wisdom teeth usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. When there is not enough space they can remain impacted, press on the neighbouring tooth or cause repeated infections. In these situations wisdom tooth extraction is recommended.

The first 24 hours

  • Bite gently on the gauze placed over the socket for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Do not rinse, spit or use a straw on the first day: keeping the blood clot in place is the basis of healing
  • Applying cold to the outside of the cheek at 15 minute intervals reduces swelling
  • Smoking and alcohol delay healing and should be avoided for the first 72 hours
  • Take the painkillers and, if prescribed, the antibiotics exactly as directed

Diet

In the first days choose lukewarm or cool, soft foods: soup that is not hot, yoghurt, purees, smoothies. Very hot, spicy, hard or grainy foods such as nuts, seeds and rice should be postponed for a few days because they can lodge in the socket. Keep chewing on the opposite side.

How long do swelling and pain last?

Swelling usually peaks on the second day and decreases from the third day. Temporary difficulty opening the mouth and slight bruising of the cheek are normal. Pain is kept under control with the recommended medication. If pain increases after the third day, becomes throbbing, or is accompanied by a bad odour, contact the clinic; the condition known as dry socket is easily treated.

Oral care

After the first day you can rinse gently with warm salt water as advised by your dentist. Continue brushing your other teeth, but avoid touching the extraction site with the brush in the first days. If sutures were placed they are usually removed within seven to ten days, or dissolve on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?

No. Teeth that have erupted properly, meet an opposing tooth and can be cleaned are kept. The decision is made after a radiographic assessment.

When can I return to work?

After a simple extraction the same or the next day; after surgical removal of an impacted tooth, usually two to three days later.
